Australia’s Accounting Graduate Shortage Intensifies, Pressuring SMEs
Businesses Turn to Offshore Outsourcing Amid Compliance Challenges
A recent report by CPA Australia has highlighted a significant and growing shortage of accounting graduates entering the workforce. The figures have almost halved over a decade, dropping to just 2,278 graduates in 2020. This decline is causing concern among small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that depend on qualified accountants to manage compliance and financial reporting obligations.
A growing gap between demand and supply
The shortage stems from a combination of factors, including decreased enrolment in accounting programs and a competitive job market drawing graduates into alternative career paths. As of 2024, there are 37,428 accounting firms – a 2% increase from 2023. With only 2,278 accounting graduates entering the workforce annually, the talent gap is widening, leading to a continued shortage of accountants. The CPA Australia report emphasises that this trend could have long-term implications for businesses across the country.
The impact on small and medium businesses
SMEs are particularly vulnerable to this shortage. With limited resources compared to larger corporations, they often struggle to attract and retain the necessary talent to handle complex financial tasks. The shortage leads to overburdened in-house teams, increased risk of non-compliance with financial regulations, and potential financial penalties.
Existing staff are being pushed to their limits, which not only affects productivity but also increases the likelihood of errors in financial reporting. With 34% of Australian employees reporting feeling “overworked”, it’s no wonder tension and stress levels are growing in accounting departments across the nation, particularly when workers feel they have to pick up the slack at understaffed companies. This situation places additional stress on employees and can ultimately impact the overall health of the business.
Access to a global talent pool
Offshore outsourcing is becoming an increasingly attractive option for businesses grappling with talent shortages. A recent surge in this practice highlights how companies are accessing a broader spectrum of skilled accountants who are proficient in both international and local financial regulations. This shift isn’t just about filling gaps—it’s about tapping into expertise that might otherwise be out of reach.
So, why are more businesses turning to offshore solutions? The benefits are compelling. Outsourcing significantly reduces operational costs associated with hiring, training, and maintaining full-time staff. It also offers scalability; companies can adjust services based on current needs without the long-term commitment of additional employees.
Moreover, by delegating routine accounting tasks, internal teams are freed up to concentrate on strategic initiatives and core business functions. This enhanced focus can lead to innovation and growth, positioning businesses to better navigate competitive markets.
The competitive edge
Many SMEs that have adopted offshore outsourcing report significant improvements in efficiency and compliance. They find that this approach not only addresses the immediate talent gap but also contributes to sustainable business growth.
Jannine Simon, Associate Director of Nexia Perth, shared her experience:
“We found that by just onboarding just one element of what we do – the ATO Compliance BAS’s and IS’s – has saved the team in Perth a considerable amount of time. This time saved has allowed our in-house team to concentrate on the core business and to provide added value to their clients.”
Looking ahead
The shortage of accounting graduates is an issue that is unlikely to be resolved quickly. SMEs must proactively seek solutions to mitigate the risks associated
with this talent gap. Offshore outsourcing is a viable and effective strategy to access global accounting talent to support and streamline business operations.
